Residence Permits

There are three types of the residence permits in the Czech Republic.

1. Temporary residence permit - for EU citizen

2. Long term residence permit - for non-EU citizen

3. Permanent residence permit - for non-EU citizen

1. Temporary residence permit (certificate) for EU citizen

For an EU citizen, the certificate of temporary residence is not a condition of their stay in the Czech Republic. It is up to the EU citizens whether they request this certificate to be issued or not. A certificate of temporary residence is issued at the request of an EU citizen who intends to stay in the Czech Republic for more than 3 months and has not threatened state security or seriously disrupted public order. We also reccommend to apply for Czech birth number which is needed in case you are planning to buy a property, car, etc.

2. Long term residence permit for non-EU citizen

Non-EU citizens are entitled to file an application for a long-term residence permit inside the Czech Republic at the Ministry of Interiour, if:

  • you have been residing in the Czech Republic on a visa for a stay of over 90 days and
  • you intend to temporarily live in the Czech Republic for more than 6 months including the previous visa
  • and if, at the same time, the purpose of your stay remains unchanged (exceptions are made e.g. for a Blue Card, family members or scientists).

In given cases, an application for a long-term residence permit without the precondition of staying on a visa for over 90 days can be submitted a Czech Embassy.

Possible purposes of residence: Studies, Business, Employment, Family Reunification, Blue Card, Green Card, Scientific Research, Culture, Other.

3. Permanent residence permit for non-EU citizen

After 5 years of continuous residence in the Czech Republic, a foreign national can file an application for permanent residence. Only half of the period of stay for the purpose of studies shall be counted.
